1. History:
While many cities have a Downtown and an Uptown, Charlotte is the only major city in the country that calls its entire business district “Uptown.” Its more than just a fun nickname, there’s a reason for that! In the mid 1700’s what’s now Uptown was the site of a Native American Trading Path that connected Georgia and Virgina. The path ran along a ridge top, making it the highest point of elevation. When early settlers went to the emerging town center, they were always going up! Over time “I’m going up to town,” evolved to “I’m going Uptown.” Today, if you walk to the center of uptown in any direction, you’ll notice you’re going slightly uphill.
Charlotte, North Carolina was also the location of the first documented discovery of gold in the U.S, in 1799. By 1835, the Charlotte, North Carolina area was becoming known as the gold mining capital of the United States. Today, Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, is known as the nation’s second largest banking district by assets, after New York City.
2. Location
Uptown is surrounded by I-277 & split into four separate Wards/neighborhoods. Each of these Wards have their own culture and vibe:
1st Ward: To the East
2nd Ward: To the South
3rd Ward: To the West
4th Ward: To the North
When living Uptown, you don’t need a car, the city center is a very walkable area. Many people live, work, and play all here in Uptown.
The best part? You don’t have to be a marathon runner to handle the city’s walkability, it’s only 2.4 square miles. Uptown also has bike routs, bus services, and the light rail. If none of those suite you, you can easily find a ride share scooter!
