During the time of the Pioneers, the land that Cornelius would call home was a place known as Virgin Springs. Virgin Springs was known for being a great place to stop for rest just north of Charlottetown.

These pioneers were greeted with both welcoming Catawba Indians, and the hostile Cherokee. Established in 1905, Cornelius was the second youngest incorporated town in Mecklenburg county.  In 1963 the landscape of Cornelius changed drastically when Duke Power dammed the Catawba river and created Lake Norman.
