1. History of Waxhaw NC

Waxhaw, located in Union County, North Carolina, has a rich history dating back to its origins as a Native American settlement named Wisacky by the Waxhaws, a group within the Catawba tribe. European settlement began in the area due to its strategic location along a trading path from Virginia to Georgia, and it was incorporated in 1889, making it the third-oldest town in Union County. President Andrew Jackson, believed by some to have been born in the region, grew up in Waxhaw.

The town’s early economic boom was fueled by the creation of a textile mill on the east side in the late 1800s, which remained the primary industry until the 1940s. The establishment of several antique shops in the 1960s marked the beginning of a new phase of growth for the community, earning it a reputation as a “hidden” shopping destination.
