Brody Finigan, the buyer specialist on our team, put together seven of his and his wife's actual favorites in and around Charlotte. These are not pulled from a roundup article. They are the places they go. The list runs from nearly free to a full splurge, and from a quiet picnic to whitewater rafting.
For each one you will find the price, the activity level, how romantic it is, how much time to set aside, and the kind of couple it suits best. Whether you are planning a first date, an anniversary, or just something different on a Friday, there should be something here for you.
1. Birkdale Village: The Easy Weekly Date Night
Huntersville, just north of Charlotte
Birkdale Village is a mixed use development, which means the shops, restaurants and housing are all built into the same walkable pocket. That one detail is what makes it such a reliable date night. You are not driving from dinner to a movie to a bar. You park once and the entire evening is in front of you.
Brody and his wife are there almost every week, and the routine barely changes. They start with a drink at Suffolk Punch or Foxcroft Wine Bar. That is usually the moment his wife deploys her favorite strategy, which is to get him a drink and then suggest they go shopping. There is plenty of shopping at Birkdale, and being able to walk around and browse with a drink in hand is a big part of why it works.
From there they always end up at bartaco, their favorite restaurant in the village. On a typical Friday night they finish at the Birkdale movie theater, which is right there with everything else. No second parking spot, no driving across town.
Price lands in the middle, though that depends entirely on how much shopping happens after that first drink. The activity level is low outside of the walking. Romance is whatever you want to make it, since there are nicer restaurants here if you want them, but for most couples this is simply a comfortable night out. Give yourself a couple of hours, more if you have never been. Best for couples who want an easy, chill evening with everything in one place.
2. The U.S. National Whitewater Center: As Cheap or As Wild As You Want
Near Mount Holly
The Whitewater Center is the most flexible date on this list. It can be one of the cheapest things you do all month or one of the most expensive, and the difference is entirely up to you. It is also one of the most unique destinations in the Charlotte area, with everything from live music to kayaking to rock climbing to whitewater rafting on the same property.
The cheap version is simple. Pay to park, walk the property, explore, and hang out by the whitewater. In the summer, one of Brody's favorite things to do is River Jam. From Thursday through Saturday between May and September, they put on live music, and it is excellent. Grab a drink, find a spot by the water and listen. That part costs nothing.
The other version is a full day. Whitewater rafting, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rock climbing, ziplines, ropes courses and more. The Center sells activity passes, day passes, season passes and date night packages, so you can size the visit to whatever you want to spend. There is an onsite bar and restaurant when you want to slow down.
Price runs from inexpensive to genuinely expensive, and the activity level works the same way. You can take an easy walk through the trails and stop for a bite, or you can spend the whole day doing activities. Romance is not the first word that comes to mind with whitewater rafting, but you will have a blast together and make real memories, and sitting by the water listening to live music is its own kind of romantic. Best for active couples, or for first dates where you want something fun and relatively low pressure.
3. Jetton Park: A Sunset Picnic on Lake Norman

Jetton Park is where Brody and his wife go when they want something cheap that still feels beautiful, and it is where this video was filmed. It sits right along the shores of Lake Norman and has plenty to do, including the walking trails you see in the video.
The part worth planning around is the waterfront beach. It is beautiful at any hour, but the real key is timing your date around sunset. The beach faces west, so you get the sun going down directly across Lake Norman. Grab some food on the way, set up a picnic, put the phones away, and spend the time together looking at the water.
If you want to stretch the evening out, Jetton Park sits right at the entrance to The Peninsula, the premier waterfront community on Lake Norman. Take a slow drive through the neighborhood and daydream about a future lake house. When you find the right one, that part is our job.
You do not need reservations, tickets, or an elaborate game plan for this one. Price is about as low as it gets on this list, and the activity level is low too unless you decide to hit the trails hard. A typical visit runs one to three hours. Even though it is one of the cheapest and easiest options here, it is also one of the most romantic. Best for couples who want uninterrupted quality time without spending a lot of money.
4. Uptown Charlotte: The Big Night Out
Build the night around an event, not a restaurant
The thing people get wrong about Uptown is picking a restaurant and calling that the date. The better move is to look at what is happening in the city that night and build the entire evening around it.
If you follow sports, you have Hornets games, Panthers games, and Charlotte Knights baseball over at Truist Field. If sports are not your thing, you can almost always find a concert, a comedy show, or a traveling Broadway production at one of the Uptown theaters. Two of Brody and his wife's favorite nights out were seeing the Jonas Brothers at the Spectrum Center and catching The Lion King when the Broadway show came through Charlotte.
From there the formula is easy. Start with a nice dinner somewhere, head to your event, then finish the night with a drink at one of the rooftop bars overlooking the skyline.
Price swings more here than anywhere else on the list. Cheap seats at a ball game and a hot dog for dinner is a real option, and so is the best seats in the house at a big concert with an incredible dinner beforehand, which makes this a candidate for the biggest splurge of the seven. The activity level is relatively low, but the romance is at the higher end. Plan on three to six hours depending on what you are doing. Best for birthdays, celebrations, or the nights when you want to get dressed up and go big.
5. South End: The Saturday Date Day
Charlotte's Rail Trail, start to finish
If Uptown is your big night out in the city, South End is your Saturday date day. It is one of Charlotte's most lively districts, and the Rail Trail is the spine that everything else runs along.
Brody and his wife start at the South End Farmers Market, a cool spot with tents set up and all kinds of goodies. They stroll through, grab a cup of coffee, then make their way down the Rail Trail. There are shops and places to check out the whole way, so you can make the day up as you go instead of booking anything in advance.
He does recommend finishing with lunch at Trolley Barn, which is their favorite restaurant in the area. If it is a hot day, add a stop at Jeni's Ice Creams, one of the best spots in Charlotte.
There is no single headline activity here. The point is getting out of the house, exploring one of the coolest parts of Charlotte, and enjoying the day together. Price lands in the middle, since walking around costs nothing but the shops and restaurants along the way add up. The activity level is moderate because you will definitely put in some steps. Romance sits around the middle too. Give yourself three to five hours. Best for couples who want a chill date where you can walk, talk and enjoy the city.

6. The Biltmore Estate: The All Out Romantic Trip
Asheville, about two hours from Charlotte
This one is technically cheating, because the Biltmore Estate is not in Charlotte. It is a gorgeous historic home in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, roughly two hours away. It earns a spot on the list anyway. If you are willing to dedicate a full day or two to a date, this is one of the best options in the state.
If you are going to do it, go all out. Head up to the Biltmore House early in the morning, tour the property, then spend real time walking the gardens and seeing everything else the estate has to offer. After that, head over for a free wine tasting and grab dinner at one of the restaurants on the property. A lot of people head into downtown Asheville from there. For a major celebration, birthday or anniversary, stay on property at the Biltmore instead.
Brody is a little biased on this one. The Biltmore is where he proposed to his wife, and by his own account it has a pretty good success rate as a proposal spot. Even setting that aside, it will take your breath away no matter how many times you have been. It is one of the most stunning places in North Carolina, and standing there with the mountain breeze and the views, it is hard to believe you are only two hours from Charlotte.
Price sits toward the upper end of the list once you add admission, food, drinks and a possible hotel stay. The activity level is moderate given how much walking is involved. Romance is about as high as it gets here. You are committing at least a full day, and possibly an entire weekend. Best saved for birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, or the times you really want to do something special.
7. A Day on Charlotte's Three Lakes
Mountain Island Lake, Lake Wylie and Lake Norman
Charlotte has three lakes, and each one suits a different kind of day on the water. Picking the right one is most of the work.
Mountain Island Lake is the smallest of the three and the most relaxed, which makes it perfect for kayaking or stand up paddle boarding. Brody's version is to pack a picnic, kayak over to one of the banks, set up out on the beach and enjoy the water for a while. It is easy enough that anybody can get out there and have a great time.
Lake Wylie is the middle size of the three, and it is the one to rent a jet ski on. There is a lot more surface area to cover than on Mountain Island Lake, but it is not as big or as busy and commercial as Lake Norman, so you can cruise around and see what the lake has to offer without fighting traffic.
Lake Norman is the largest and has the most waterfront restaurants, which makes it the pick for a full lake day. Rent a pontoon and make an afternoon of it. Brody and his wife's favorite waterfront spot on Lake Norman is Lake House. The seafood there is very good, but his personal favorite is actually the wings.
Price ranges from affordable to a major splurge depending on whether you are renting or bringing your own watercraft, and on what you do once you are out there. The activity level is moderate to high. A day on the water with a waterfront dinner to cap it off is pretty romantic in anyone's book. Set aside a half day to a full day. Best for outdoorsy couples, a summer date, or anyone who wants to see what lake life around Charlotte is actually like.
