The Best Things to Do in North Carolina This Spring

Spring might be the best-kept secret of the North Carolina calendar. The weather turns mild, the whole state bursts into color, and the festival season kicks off from the mountains to the coast.

Here are the best things to do across North Carolina this spring, from wildflower hikes and famous gardens to music festivals, racing, and the coast. Charlotte sits right in the middle of it all, which makes the Queen City a perfect home base for a spring adventure.

Chase the Wildflower Bloom in the Mountains

North Carolina's mountain wildflowers are nearly as famous as its fall color. From March into June, the bloom unfolds in waves: trout lilies and violets first, then trillium and lady slippers, and finally azaleas, mountain laurel, and rhododendron painting the hillsides.

Some of the best places to catch it are Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the mileposts along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Grandfather Mountain, and Chimney Rock. Closer to the Piedmont, Raven Rock State Park near Lillington and the Flower Hill Nature Preserve near Clayton hide a surprising amount of spring color. Bring a camera and go early to beat both the crowds and the afternoon heat.

See Biltmore Blooms in Asheville

Every spring, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville turns into one of the best flower shows in the South. Biltmore Blooms runs from late March through May 21 in 2026, with more than 100,000 bulbs planted across the grounds and a steady progression of color as the season moves along.

The timing rewards repeat visits. Late March brings tulips, daffodils, and orchids in the conservatory. Early May is peak in the 20-acre azalea garden, a sea of pink, purple, orange, red, and white. Estate admission also includes the winery, Antler Hill Village, and the farm, so it is easy to turn a garden walk into a full day.

Celebrate at the North Carolina Azalea Festival

Down on the coast, Wilmington throws one of the state's signature spring parties. The North Carolina Azalea Festival has been going since 1948 and now draws around 300,000 people for a long weekend of parades, concerts, a street fair, and garden tours.

The flowers are the real star. Airlie Gardens alone holds more than 75,000 azaleas, many at peak during the festival, and the Cape Fear Garden Club tour opens private gardens across the city. Wilmington itself makes an easy long-weekend base, with a riverfront downtown, historic neighborhoods, and nearby beaches all within reach.

Catch Live Music at a Spring Festival

Spring is festival season across North Carolina. In Wilkesboro, MerleFest fills four days in April with more than 80 performers across a dozen stages, celebrating the traditional-plus mountain music that Doc and Merle Watson made famous. It is one of the premier roots-music gatherings in the country.

There is plenty more on the calendar: the Shakori Hills festival near Pittsboro in May, the Cheerwine Festival in Salisbury honoring the state's own cherry soft drink, Brewgaloo in Raleigh with more than 100 breweries, and the Loch Norman Highland Games in Huntersville, where Scottish culture meets caber tosses and hammer throws just north of Charlotte.

Get Outside on State Parks and Greenways

The whole point of spring is the weather, and North Carolina makes it easy to get outdoors. The state park system spans the mountains to the coast, and the Charlotte region alone maintains more than 200 parks and miles of paved greenways for walking, running, and biking.

Around Charlotte, the Little Sugar Creek Greenway threads through the heart of the city and connects to Freedom Park, while the U.S. National Whitewater Center offers trails, climbing, and paddling on thousands of acres just west of town. Farther out, the Yadkin River, Pilot Mountain, and the Uwharrie National Forest reward a spring day trip.

Spring in Charlotte: Racing, Rapids, and Festivals

If you are staying close to home, Charlotte fills its spring calendar quickly. The Coca-Cola 600 runs at Charlotte Motor Speedway over Memorial Day weekend, one of the biggest dates on the racing calendar. The Whitewater Center hosts a Memorial Day celebration with music and river events.

Uptown comes alive too, with Charlotte SHOUT bringing art, food, and music to the streets, and the greenways and parks hitting their best weather of the year. Between the racing, the rapids, and the festivals, spring might be the easiest season to fall in love with the Charlotte area.

Head to the Coast

By late April, the water along North Carolina's 320-mile shoreline warms up enough for stand-up paddleboarding and easy days on the sand, before the peak summer crowds arrive. The Outer Banks, Wrightsville Beach, and the Crystal Coast all shine in spring.

Cooler temperatures and lower off-season rates make a spring beach trip one of the best values of the year. Pair it with the Azalea Festival in Wilmington and you have a full coastal weekend built around the season.
