Weddington, North Carolina is one of Charlotte's most affluent and popular suburbs, and it has a personality all its own. Quiet, secluded, and almost entirely residential, it draws families who want big lots, custom homes, and some of the top rated schools in the region.

Where Weddington Is Located
Weddington sits about 14 miles southeast of Charlotte's city center, positioned right between Ballantyne and Waxhaw. That location gives you a genuinely rural feel while keeping you close to everything Charlotte has to offer. From Weddington, you can reach Uptown Charlotte or Charlotte Douglas International Airport in roughly 35 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic.
Weddington is also in Union County rather than Mecklenburg County, and that matters for two big reasons: lower taxes and better schools. For a lot of buyers, that combination is a major part of the appeal.
A Town That Is Residential by Design
Weddington covers around 11,000 acres, and only 27 of those acres are zoned commercial. Nearly the entire town is residential, and that is intentional. The town keeps its zoning focused on large lot residential, with most homes sitting on an acre or more, and that is exactly what gives Weddington the look and feel people fall in love with.
The gas stations and shopping centers popping up all around the area, in places like Waxhaw and Indian Trail, are simply not appearing inside Weddington. The town has protected its quiet, wooded character, and living here feels like being in a secluded rural bubble even though the city is a short drive away.
Groceries, Dining, and Shopping Nearby
So where do you get groceries if there is almost no commercial space in town? The great thing about Weddington is that you are about ten minutes from everything just up Providence Road. Waverly is right there with a Whole Foods plus a full district of restaurants and shopping. It is an open pavilion style development, very walkable, and fun for the whole family.
You also have Rea Farms, Blakeney, and the Arboretum all nearby, and everything in Ballantyne and downtown Waxhaw is just a quick drive away. So you have everything you could ever need and want all around you, while you live in a quiet residential pocket that stays out of the retail sprawl.
The Address Confusion Everyone Runs Into
Here is the one thing that confuses everybody, even people who live in Weddington. The town blends together with the surrounding area, and it is genuinely hard to tell where Weddington stops and where Matthews, Waxhaw, and Marvin begin. Weddington does not even have its own zip code. Most of the town carries a Matthews, North Carolina address, and other parts carry a Waxhaw address.

Schools are one of the biggest reasons Weddington is so popular. The town feeds into Union County Public Schools, one of the highest rated public school systems in the Charlotte area, and Weddington's schools in particular are some of the most popular and highest rated in the district. Weddington Elementary, Weddington Middle, and Weddington High all sit within a few minutes of one another.
Weddington High School is consistently rated one of the best public high schools not just in Union County but in the entire Charlotte region. It ranks number 32 in North Carolina, number two in Union County, and it even lands in the top 1,000 public high schools in the country.
It is not just academics, either. Weddington is a powerhouse in athletics. The football team alone has multiple state championships, and Friday nights here feel like something out of a movie.
The Homes and Luxury Neighborhoods
Because Weddington is almost entirely residential, the homes are the star of the show. Almost every home sits on an acre or more, with long driveways, mature trees, and custom homes that do not repeat. You will not find cookie cutter houses here, and you will not find density either. There are no townhomes, condos, or apartments. The town really only allows one thing to be built: single family homes.
The luxury neighborhoods here are fantastic. Highgate is Weddington's signature luxury neighborhood, full of custom built estates. Twin Lakes offers stunning luxury new construction from some of Charlotte's most prominent luxury builders. Then there are truly unique communities like Aero Plantation, a fly-in community spanning over 400 acres with its own private airstrip. You also have great private communities like Lake Forest Preserve and Lake Providence, each with large lots and custom brick homes.
What Homes Cost in Weddington
The average sale price for a home in Weddington over the past year is $1.465 million. Let that sink in, because that is the average, not the top of the line. It is no surprise that prices here run much higher than many of the surrounding areas. That said, there is a real range when you shop here.
On the lower end, you can find older homes built in the 1980s and 1990s, around 2,800 to 3,000 square feet on those big, beautiful lots, usually between $750,000 and $900,000. Bump your budget up a bit and you can find newer, larger homes around 3,500 to 4,000 square feet in neighborhoods like Brumley and Lake Forest Preserve, typically running about $1.1 to $1.2 million. At the top of the market, new construction luxury communities like Luna Estates and Twin Lakes put you easily above $2 million.
One thing to note: backyard living carries a real premium in Weddington. A luxury pool or a full backyard oasis makes a big difference in price, and it will be very hard to find a home with a really nice pool under $1.3 million.

The Downsides of Living in Weddington
Weddington is a great place to live, but just like anywhere, there are downsides, and it may not be for you. First, the cost of living here is extremely high. With an average sale price of $1.465 million, there are no starter homes in Weddington. This is a move up or established market.
Second, you will drive everywhere. There is no downtown or walkable town center in Weddington itself, and as we covered earlier, there is very little commercial area at all. Everything is a quick drive away, but it is a drive nonetheless. If you want a walkable town center, you will not find it here.
Third, those large lots cut both ways. A lot of lot comes with a lot of yard work. And many homes here sit on septic systems or wells, which is completely fine, but it can surprise buyers moving from the city. So if you are a young professional looking for high energy walkability and nightlife, Weddington is probably not your spot. But if you want a family oriented community with amenity rich neighborhoods, fantastic luxury homes, and top rated schools, Weddington is hard to beat.
