Top 5 Downtown Charlotte, NC Spots You Have to See
A quick note for newcomers: in Charlotte, the downtown core is called Uptown. It is compact, walkable, and packed with museums, parks, food, and sports, most of it within an easy stroll of Trade and Tryon streets.
Here are five Uptown spots that belong at the top of your list, whether you are visiting or deciding where to put down roots.
1. NASCAR Hall of Fame
Charlotte's racing heritage, up close
Charlotte is the heart of NASCAR country, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown celebrates it with interactive exhibits, historic cars, racing simulators you can actually drive, and the popular Glory Road banked-track display.
It is engaging even if you are not a hardcore race fan, and it anchors a five-acre site that includes a theater and a broadcast studio. General admission runs around $27 for adults.
2. Discovery Place Science
Hands-on science for all ages
Discovery Place Science has been a Uptown fixture for more than 75 years, with three floors of hands-on exhibits, live experiments, an in-house rainforest, and a large-format IMAX dome theater.
It is a favorite for families and a great rainy-day or hot-afternoon stop. The museum even hosts adults-only evenings with higher-level science and pop-culture themes.
3. Romare Bearden Park
Green space with skyline views
Named for the celebrated Charlotte-born artist, Romare Bearden Park is a 5.4-acre green space with gardens, fountains, sculptures, and some of the best skyline views in the city. It sits right across from Truist Field.
It is the perfect spot for a picnic, an evening stroll, or catching a free summer concert. Grab food from the nearby 7th Street market and make an afternoon of it.
4. The Market at 7th Street
North Carolina's first urban food hall
The Market at 7th Street, also known as 7th Street Public Market, was North Carolina's first urban food hall. Inside you will find local vendors serving everything from crepes and dumplings to pizza, coffee, and craft goods.
It is the easiest way to eat like a local in Uptown, and it sits right by a light rail station and First Ward Park, so you can roll a meal into a walk through the neighborhood.
5. Spectrum Center and Uptown Sports
Pro sports in the heart of the city
Spectrum Center is the home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets and the city's largest indoor concert venue, hosting major touring acts throughout the year. It is one of several pro sports venues packed into Uptown.
Within walking distance you can also catch the NFL's Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC at Bank of America Stadium, or a Charlotte Knights minor league baseball game at Truist Field. Few downtowns put this much sports within a few blocks.

The beauty of Uptown is how close everything sits. You can take in a museum, walk to a park, grab lunch at a food hall, and catch a game without ever moving your car. The light rail makes it even easier, and parking decks often drop their rates in the evenings.
