La Lima
From the team behind Yunta Nikkei and Viva Chicken, La Lima brought fast-casual Peruvian sandwiches, called sánguches, to South End, and it quickly became one of the most talked-about openings of the year. The Chicharron sandwich, with crispy pork belly and sweet potato, is the one to try.
It is quick, affordable, and full of flavor, which makes it an easy weekday lunch or a casual dinner. Find it at 131 E. Park Ave.
ESO Artisanal Pasta
Inside Optimist Hall, ESO Artisanal Pasta serves fresh pasta made with ingredients imported from Italy, from chefs who earned a following on the Great Food Truck Race. The menu rotates, but the penne alla vodka and cacio e pepe are standouts.
Pastas come in small and large sizes, so it is easy to sample without overdoing it. Optimist Hall sits at 1115 N. Brevard St., near NoDa.
Surefire Market
Surefire was a beloved Rock Hill spot until a fire shut it down. The owners launched a food truck, won over Charlotte, and landed a permanent home at Camp North End. The fried chicken sandwich and the smash burger are the headliners.
The short menu means you never have to overthink your order, and Camp North End's open-air setting makes it a fun place to hang. Find it at 301 Camp Road.
Sorellina Pasta Co.
Sorellina Pasta Co. tucked a fresh pasta shop and Italian market into a refurbished Craftsman house on The Plaza. It is part restaurant, part specialty grocer, and a great stop whether you are dining in or taking ingredients home.
The setting gives it a warm, neighborhood feel that fits the Plaza Midwood area. You will find it at 2341 The Plaza.
Papi Ricko
Papi Ricko added a Latin-fusion option to Plaza Midwood's busy dining strip, sitting next to Moo and Brew and across from the Thirsty Beaver. Expect fun, shareable dishes and drinks in a lively setting.
It fits right into one of Charlotte's best neighborhoods for walking between bars and restaurants. Find it at 1226 Central Ave.
La Bonbonniere Bakery
La Bonbonniere is a locally owned bakery serving around 30 kinds of over-the-top cookies through a tiny walk-up window in Uptown. It is a fun, grab-and-go sweet stop in the middle of the city.
Perfect for an afternoon treat or an easy dessert on the go, you will find the window at 329 S. Tryon St.
Que Fresa
The popular Mexican eatery Que Fresa opened a second Charlotte location in the Duke Energy Plaza in Uptown, this one with a cocktail bar and all-day breakfast. It is a solid choice for everything from morning tacos to evening margaritas.
