Concord sits just northeast of Charlotte and has become one of the fastest-growing cities in the region. It offers a lot of what draws people to the Charlotte area, often at a friendlier price, but the rapid growth brings real trade-offs.

Pro: Location and Commute

Concord's biggest advantage is its location. It sits about 20 to 27 miles from Uptown Charlotte with direct access to Interstate 85, so commuting into the city for work is realistic. The average commute runs around 27 minutes outside of peak traffic.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is roughly half an hour away, which is a plus for frequent travelers. For people who want Charlotte's job market without Charlotte's home prices, Concord's position is hard to beat.

Pro: Schools

Families are drawn to Concord for the Cabarrus County Schools, which are known for solid academics and strong extracurriculars. Schools like Cox Mill High and Jay M. Robinson High carry good reputations, and there are charter, magnet, and early-college options as well.

For families looking at private school, Cannon School is a well-regarded independent option. Many parents specifically choose Cabarrus County over the larger Charlotte-Mecklenburg district for the smaller-system feel.

Pro: Things to Do

Concord punches above its weight on entertainment. It is the home of Charlotte Motor Speedway, which hosts NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 and the Bank of America Roval 400 and lights up for a popular Christmas show. Several professional racing teams, including Hendrick Motorsports, are based here.

Beyond racing, Concord Mills is the largest outlet mall in North Carolina with more than 200 stores, plus a Sea Life Aquarium. Add a historic downtown, Reed Gold Mine, Great Wolf Lodge, and a full calendar of parks and festivals, and there is plenty to do close to home.

Concord is more affordable than Charlotte proper. The median home price runs in the mid-$300,000s to around $380,000, below the city's luxury-skewed averages, and the overall cost of living sits slightly below the national average.

Rents are a bit lower than Charlotte's too. For families and commuters who want suburban space and newer construction without paying Charlotte prices, the value is real.

The Downsides

The same growth that makes Concord attractive is creating growing pains. Traffic congestion has become a daily issue, especially around Concord Mills and along I-85 at rush hour, and road expansion has not kept pace with the population.

Public transit is limited, so a car is essential for most trips. Rising home values have brought rising property taxes along with them, and some neighborhoods have seen an uptick in property crime as the city has grown.
