Biltmore Estate
Biltmore is a 250-room French Renaissance chateau on 8,000 acres just south of downtown Asheville, still owned by George Vanderbilt's descendants more than a century after it was finished. It is about two hours west of Charlotte, which makes it a long day trip or an easy overnight. The house gets the attention, but the grounds, the winery and Antler Hill Village are included with every ticket and take most of a day on their own.

Biltmore House holds 250 rooms and was completed in 1895 for George Vanderbilt. It has stayed in the family ever since and is still privately owned.

The gardens and grounds were laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, and access to all of it comes with every ticket, including grounds-only admission.

The village at the south end of the estate holds the winery, restaurants, shops, a farm and exhibits. A wine tasting is included with admission.

An outdoor light and sound experience projected across the house facade and gardens, running select evenings. Dogs are not permitted at Luminere.

The house is decorated and opened at night from early November into January, ticketed separately from a daytime visit.

The Inn, Village Hotel and the Cottages all sit on the property, and some packages bundle unlimited house admission with the room.

Know Before You Go
Buy online and at least a week ahead. It guarantees your date, and Biltmore charges $10 more at the gate. Every house ticket carries a timed entry reservation, and dates do sell out in spring and at Christmas. The estate entrance is about three miles from the house, so build in drive time on top of your reservation. Tickets are non-refundable but can be rebooked for a future date if you call at least 48 hours ahead. Outside food and drink are not permitted except water bottles and designated picnic spots, and only clear plastic bottles are allowed inside the house. Cards are accepted everywhere, cash only for dining and overnight stays. Discounts exist for seniors, military and partner attraction passholders. Location & Lifestyle
Biltmore is at 1 Lodge Street, Asheville 28803, immediately south of downtown Asheville, with the reception and ticketing center at 128 Approach Road. From Charlotte it is roughly 130 miles and about two hours on I-85 to US-74 or up I-40, which puts it in range as a long day trip but better as an overnight. Biltmore Village sits at the estate gates with shops and restaurants, downtown Asheville is ten minutes north, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is a few minutes east. April into May for the gardens and November into December for Christmas are the two busiest stretches of the year.

Biltmore recommends at least a full day. The house alone takes a couple of hours, the estate entrance is three miles from the house, and the grounds and winery can fill an afternoon on their own.
