U.S. National Whitewater Center
The Whitewater Center sits on 1,300 acres of woods along the Catawba River in west Charlotte, about fifteen miles from uptown. The centerpiece is the world's largest manmade whitewater river, but most of the property is trail. Walking onto it costs nothing. You pay to park, and you pay again only if you want to raft, climb, zip or ride.
A Manmade River and Forty Miles of Trail

Seven pumps push treated water through two channels of Class II to IV rapids, and a conveyor carries rafts back to the top so you never have to get out.

The trail system runs across the full 1,300 acres and is shared by hikers, runners and mountain bikers, with routes from beginner to advanced.

Ropes courses range from easy to difficult. Most ziplines are walk-up with a day pass, though Figure 8 and Double Down need a reservation.

Dogs need their own pass. Entering without a dog is free, and a 2.5-mile bike loop runs just outside the fence.

From mid-November to mid-February the whitewater channels become ice skating and curling rinks, and skate rental is included in the pass.

River Jam concerts, Tuck Fest, race series, film nights and outdoor yoga run through the calendar, and many of them are free to attend.

Know Before You Go
Entry to the property is free and so is the trail system, but parking runs $13 per vehicle per day or $45 for the year, and oversized vehicles are $25. Anything on the activity list needs a pass and a signed waiver. Whitewater rafting and the Figure 8 and Double Down ziplines need a reservation on top of that. Outside food and drink are not allowed anywhere on the property, including the parking lots, and there is no smoking, vaping or drone flying. Dogs are welcome on leash and off leash inside the dog park. Only pedal-assist Class 1 e-bikes are permitted on the trails. Refunds and rain checks are not offered, so watch the forecast before you buy. Confirm current rates, hours and the day's activity schedule before you go.
Location & Lifestyle
The Whitewater Center is at 5000 Whitewater Center Parkway in Charlotte 28214, off I-85 near the Gaston County line, roughly fifteen miles and twenty minutes from uptown. Mount Holly and Belmont sit just across the river, both with small walkable downtowns. Charlotte's River District is taking shape on the same side of town, and Charlotte Douglas is about fifteen minutes southeast. Three restaurants and several bars operate on site, so plenty of people come out for a beer and live music without doing a single activity.
